The cathedral churches and the other buildings that formed part of the bishopric’s allodium were founded in the 11th century in the lower part of the historical centre, close to the river.
In the first half of the 20th century the great white walls were painted by Josep Mª Sert.
Josep Maria Sert works can be found across Europe and America; from New York’s Rockefeller Centre to the Society of Nations building in Geneva.

To the north, Pruit, with its scattered farmhouses, evokes a time when wealth was associated with the land.
Empúries (Catalan: Empúries [əmˈpuɾiəs]) was an ancient city on the Mediterranean coast of Catalonia. The Greek city Emporion, meaning "trading place", was founded in 575 BC by Greek colonists from Phocaea. After the invasion of Gaul from Iberia by Hannibal the Carthaginian general in 218 BC, the city was occupied by the Romans (Latin: Emporiæ). In the Early Middle Ages, the city's exposed coastal position left it open to marauders and it was abandoned.
